How to learn Kanji
Any candidate wants to learn Japanese language, it is inevitable to learn Kanji.
However, before starting it, I’d like to advise several points.
- Two ways of pronunciations
Kanji has Onyomi音読み(Chinese style pronunciation) and Kunyomi訓読み(Japanese style pronunciation).
Kanji was brought in Japan about A.D500-900. We did not have writing characters, but only speaking language.
We put speaking words into Kanji (Onyomi) and at the same time, kept Chinese pronunciation as Kunyomi.
- Hand writing
If you would like to take JLPT, you should train hand writing. However you would like to learn Japanese as a tool of business or for hobby, it is not necessary to master writing by hand. Keyboard typing is quite useful and word processor application is will be the Knights of the Round Table.
In my Kanji Training, you only master Hiragana typing then you can learn Kanji how to pronounce and meaning.
- Structure of Kanji
For the beginners, I recommend recognizing Kanji as a small picture or a sign. If you see many times these pictures, your brain will identify each and remember them slowly. Japanese cartoons（マンガ） is quite helpful.
I was a returnee child and up to nearly 10 years, I could read only Hiragana. My mother bought me cartoons and in that book, Kanji appeared with ruby (print hiragana). I read so many times the same cartoon and finally mastered Kanji.
To avoid such a primitive way, I will show you how to recognize Kanji.
First of all, Kanji structure is divided in 2 parts, Hen（偏） and Tsukuri（旁）.
For example, 滝 = 氵 + 竜
氵（さんずい） is Hen and 竜（りゅう） is Tsukuri.
Hen shows the nature of Kanji. If you understand this, you can imagine the meaning of Kanji.
氵（さんずい） means this Kanji is related with water.
