Literacy rate in Edo era

In Edo era, most of text books were wood blocked and very expensive. Therefore, in private school, the elder children used to copy it by hand for juniors.

At that time, there was no public school but private school except for Samurai. The literacy rates were 70-80% for general people and most 100% for samurai. (At that time in London, about 10% in children.)
